Muir's Tours - Wildlife Tours

 Riding Mountain National Park

Manitoba Canada

A great location for wildlife watching and if you are planning to visit Churchill for the polar bears (Oct / Nov), come here too and see black bears, all in one visit.  There are many other animals and birds in this area, so it deserves a special visit.

Sample Itinerary

Wednesdays and Saturdays (usually): Meet your host / guide in Winnipeg just before lunch and depart Winnipeg for Riding Mountain National Park, by our minibus (or make your own way by car / 4X4 - the last section is a little rough). If time allows we will visit Delta Marsh Waterfowl Research Centre on the way to Riding Mountain (except in late October when Delta may be flooded, in this case we may stop at Island Park to see what migrating birds we can find). We do not stop for lunch so we suggest you have some packed food. Arrive at Riding Mountain after about 3 hours, meet the staff & pets, get settled into your rooms and then enjoy a welcome dinner. (L, D.).

Days 2 & 3 For the next 2 days enjoy your beautiful surroundings. Wildlife activities begin at first light and end at sundown. We have a "help yourself breakfast", plus 2 home cooked meals daily, and participate in wildlife safaris, guided nature walks, and sessions in the bear viewing blind. Nature interpretive commentary covers the biomes and ecosystems for the area with special emphasis on the large mammals and seasons. Enjoy slide presentations in the evening. (B, L, D.).

Day 4  After breakfast, we drive you back to Winnipeg or you make your own way. (B.).

Seasons:  The most popular period is mid October as many people wish to combine a visit to see the black bears at Riding Mountain with the polar bears in Churchill. September is another good period, with polar bear and black bear options being possible with polar bears at Cape Tatnam Reserve (south of Churchill). From mid May to mid / late October (including black bears) and November to March (no bears in Riding Mountain NP as they are hibernating).

Dates: Anytime you like, however if you want to see polar and black bears make it - 26th - 30th September and 1st - 7th October 2008
