Chile - Main |
From the driest place on Earth through the splendour of the Patagonian Andes to the end of the Earth - Tierra del Fuego. Chile ranks high on many adventurers lists
The
North
In the north, Chile borders with tropical Peru and the Atacama Desert is
remarkable as the driest place on Earth. In parts it has never rained as
far as humans know, and yet there are tribes who have survived in these parts -
the Atacama and the Aymara. Today more than a million people live around
the edges of the desert, mainly on the Pacific coast. For most of the 600 miles
north to south you could travel through the desert and see very little, with the
exception of the signs of past life - nothing rots here as there is no moisture.
However, like in any desert area there are oases - and with the Andes nearby that means hot springs and geysers which make a dramatic scene. Occasionally you will come across a small village. A favourite watering hole is San Pedro de Atacama and this is well worth a visit.
Trips available all year round.
Central
Chile
In the central area there is no extremism about the climate and it is here that
the capital - Santiago lies. As is the case everywhere in Chile, the Andes are
not far away and Santiago is blessed with a beautiful backdrop of the high
Andes. On the lower slopes are some fine ski resorts, frequented by
Santiago's elite and foreigners. Trips available all year round.
The
Lake District
The dramatic scenery of lakes and volcanoes has attracted many outdoor
enthusiasts to this area. Here you will find one of the largest temperate
rainforests on Earth, next to a multitude of lakes and the ever-present backdrop
of the Andes.
Patagonia
South America's most dramatic and scenic area is another World Class attraction
for outdoors people. The main focus is
Torres del Paine NP, nature lovers will
be in their element here. Amid spectacular mountain vistas there is the
constant music of the waterfalls and chuckling brooks, and the distant thunder
of the glaciers which are continuously eroded by sun and wind.
The
Islands
Three Chilean islands in the Pacific are renowned for their special attractions.
Easter Island
- gigantic moai sculptures and volcanic scenery.
Robinson Crusoe Island
- a World
Biosphere Reserve.
Chiloe
- a charming enclave in the South Pacific with rich myths and culture.
Chilean
Antarctic
Only 3 hours away is the Antarctic Continent. 3 hours by plane or 3 days across
choppy seas - which would you choose ? Our Fly and Cruise package is the best
way to see The White Continent.
