Dog Sledding

Finland / Lapland
Dog Sledding -
This traditional dog sledding experience in the north of Finland includes a number of nights in wilderness cabins.  The area we travel through is very remote with many wild animals about.

After, some initial training, lead your own team of 4 or 6 dogs far off the beaten track to the far north of Finland - part of the homelands of the Sameh - as Lappland spans a number of countries.

Neither age nor gender are barriers to the exciting sport of mushing - all are level factors for handling the dog-sled, but you do need a certain amount of strength and stamina. Most of our trips in Lapland are suitable for novices through to experienced mushers, as the techniques are simple and are absorbed easily in a few hours.  The difference between the options is the distance covered (and amount of effort) each day.  So you do not need to experienced but it certainly helps if you are conditioned to moderate regular exercise, particularly for the more demanding (longer periods of sledding).  A rowing machine is the best way to get conditioned as you need to concentrate on arms and back, while not forgetting the legs.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival at local airport and transfer by taxi to our lodge. On arrival at the lodge you will be shown your accommodation and a warm sauna will be waiting for you. Evening meal and discussion of the following weeks schedule.

Day 2
Today you will meet the dogs and take a 20km training dog sled tour to enable you to learn your own teams names and have a good working rapor with your dogs.

Days 3 - 6
We depart after a hearty breakfast on a three-four day wilderness dog sled safari. Travelling north along the Russian border we will cover between 30-40km per day with sled.

The scenery is breathtaking and if the dogs catch sight of an elk, reindeer or wild bird then the pace is also breathtaking but with well trained dogs and guides a simple command and the dogs will continue on the correct trail without any misshap. Stops along the route will be made for a chance to take some photographs and also a light snack for the clients aswell as for the dogs. Evenings will be spent in wilderness cabins along the trail.

If weather or trail conditions donīt allow we will return to the lodge on the evening of the third day of the wilderness safari. After a cosy night in the lodge the clients will then have the opportunity to take part in the following activities. Cross-country skiing, down hill skiing/snowboarding, snow-shoeing or a dog sledding day tour from the lodge.

Day 7
After returning to the lodge the previous evening and relaxing in the sauna, day seven can either be a relaxation day or at a minimal extra cost (150 Euro per snowscooter) we can take a four hour snowscooter tour stoping for lunch with an open fire.
