Namibia – Trekking Fish River Canyon
The Fish River Canyon is regarded as the number one
challenge in Southern Africa, maybe the whole of Africa. second in size to
Arizona's Grand Canyon and third in size to Mexico's Copper Canyon, but here in
Namibia we have the "very remote - pretty dangerous" label. To trek from
end to end, all 160 km, is for the very serious only with full expedition
planning. We can arrange this for you.
If you are a more modest
trekker, try our 5 day / 80 km hike, detailed below.
Itinerary
Day 1 We
travel from Windhoek to Hardrap (250km) and relax in the swimming pool or at the
lake, watching the fish eagles, pelicans and spoonbills. Camp overnight.
Day 2 We continue to the northern area of the canyon (300km). Camp overnight.
Day 3 Early morning departure with 4x4 vehicles to the starting point. Start trekking down to the Löwen River Canyon and for about 6 hours to a camping spot near the mouth of the Löwen River. There is a beautiful spring here with drinkable water. Once we have marked our camp, we leave the cook to prepare dinner while we hike a very scenic 4km circular route that leads back to the camping spot. Camp overnight. 21km hiking.
Day 4 We continue to the plateau between the two canyon gorges (Fish- and Löwen rivers). Then drop down into the Fish River Canyon to another camping spot near a natural pool of the Fish River. Along the way we pass very high rock formations (pinnacles). Camping overnight. 14km hike.
Day 5 Hike down to the confluence of the Fish River and Löwen River Canyons. Overnight here. One more pinnacle on the way. Swimming is a must here. Camping overnight. 14km hike.
Day 6 Hike down the Fish River to a camping spot between trees along the river bank. Facilities: sleeping under stars. 14km hike.
Day 7 Hike out of the main canyon into side canyons and continue to the rim, and then reaching our vehicle at about noon. Camping overnight. 17km hike.
