In 1973, the government of Peru established one of the largest National Parks in the world - Manu NP. It includes nearly the entire drainage system of the Manu River and the adjacent eastern Andean slopes in Southeast Peru. It is almost all virgin tropical forest of several types, including a cross section of eastern Andean habitats from upper tropical forest of the foothills through all stages of sub-tropical cloud forest to elfin forest and moist puna grasslands at the summit of the eastern Cordillera.
The Manu Biosphere reserve contains many rare and fascinating species of flora and fauna that humans have already eliminated from most parts of the Amazon Basin and the surrounding mountains. The species include the extremely rare Black Caiman and Giant River Otter, as well the Jaguar, Tapir, Spider, Monkey, Woolly Monkey and seven species of Macaws. It is the only park in the world with over 1000 species of bird and 15,000 species of plants and it probably holds one of the highest diversity of insects and spiders.
