East Africa Safaris & Mountain hikes with local guides

In Tanzania Muir's Tours has an arrangement with a co-operative where all the guides own the business and their enthusiasm is equalled by their professionalism.  We are very proud to be working with them.

Here are some of the comments by previous travellers who have used the services of the co-operative.

Muirs Tours put together an 8 day 'budget safari' in Kenya for my 3 teenage children and me in August 2008. We had exclusive use of our own vehicle with our own driver/guide and cook. Though intended to be low-cost, the safari exceeded expectations; in fact it was the best holiday of our lives! We had big comfortable tents; 3 delicious cooked meals each day; fantastic guiding (saw the 'big 5' several times and many more besides), and slept twice in luxury:at a guest house in the middle and at the end of the holiday. By travelling with our African companions we gained many insights into Kenya, its people and wildlife and got to feel part of our surroundings. We dined in the home of the safari organiser in Nairobi and heard of his passion for the country. We visited a Maasai village and felt privileged to be guests in their unique world. All in all Muirs Tour scores 10 out of 10 for quality, value, organisation, ethics and imagination; thank you Mo very much!!

George our guide for the luxury camping safari was excellent, he appeared to know all the Latin names for the birds as well as the popular names.  In addition to be very knowledgable he was attentive and had obviously been well trained.  We later learned that he had been to university and was continuing his studies related to his chosen profession of guiding.

We stayed at very beautiful and high quality camps such as Swala Camp in Tarangire and George was able to match the very exacting standards of the hospitality shown to us by the Swala camp staff.  This was despite the fact that George was doing it in the middle of the bush - setting up table for a 3 course meal, with great scenery (chosen by George).

George, our guide and Eloise, our cook were wonderful!  George was funny and knowledgable and very attentive to our needs.  The food was great as well.

Lake Manyara campsite was just like a site you'd find in the states, the others were more rustic.  All the campsites were wonderful!  We stayed at a lodge for one night and it was a great place with friendly staff.

It was nice to have several cultural experiences mixed in with our wildlife safari, in addition to the Massai of Longido area, we enjoyed the walk around the village in Mesquito Creek at Lake Manyara, visiting the Bushmen, the night game drive...etc.       Bill & Melynda L. USA    July 2004

I want to let you know happy and fully satisfied we had been with our guide (joseph nyabasi) and his team, when we climbed the kili in january 2002. my wife and i made it to the summit on january, 24th, 2002 and we would not had a chance to do so, if our guides (joseph, cosmos, theogratio and the others) had not done such a great job. i really can do nothing, but recommend these guides without any hesitation to anybody, who plans to climb the kilimanjaro.

we felt absolutly safe during our whole trip and everybody of the team was extremly obliging. all in all i can not imagine of one single point, which could have been done better or was not to our fully satisfaction.

i wish you all the best! yours  florian p. Austria

I am happy to recommend using Joseph our guide and specifically the budget camping trip. We were lucky to have Joseph as our guide and George as our cook - who were both very knowledable, courteous and fun to be with.

I climbed to summit of Uhuru Peak in 2002, using support of mountain guide Joseph Niabasy. You can see my article about this climbing to Kili in http://www.geocities.com/tdrarh/NEWS/ADVENT/Kili/Kilie.htm

I had experience of mountain climbing not only in Kili, but in Caucasus and Alps too. To my mind Joseph is the best of my mountain guides. One lady in our group dont have any experience in mountain climbing. So, it was very hard for her to climb to Uhuru peak, and I think it was absolutely impossible for her without support of excellent guide. Joseph protected her against sun with the help of umbrella during the voyage across high desert, he gave her his gloves , when it was cold for her near the Gilmans point. All of us (5 people from Russia and one lady from Germany) climbed to Uhuru Peak and this success may only have been possible due to good work of our guide.

P.S. You can use my letter and my full name in your website.  Nikolay Nosov, Moscow, Russia.

Joseph was an excellent guide.   The campsites were clean, simple, adequate facitlites (one even had an outdoor shower rigged up).  Actually, the locations where we camped were really beautiful and seemed untrampled.  Joseph and other guides seemed very proud of  their unlittered environment.
At the Simba campsite on the rim of the crater, there were other groups of campers, even a bus full, and I enjoyed meeting people who'd come from all over.  I don't think that i would have met that many people if I had stayed in a lodge.
Joseph and the driver George were attentive and provided everything I needed .  They cooked, set up the tent, did dishes and all that.  Equipment was entirely adequate and the food was delicious, fresh and well prepared.  They even gave me Swahili lessons.

I would recommend these guys to anyone.  Joseph has a curiosity and interest in what he was showing me.  Much different from some guides who just blather on without knowledge.
