The aim of the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) is to bring about improvements in the working conditions of the trekking porter, by raising awareness among trekkers, mountaineers, trek and expedition companies, leaders, sirdars and staff.
Muir's Tours supports the IPPG in it's efforts to improve the working conditions of the Himalayan porter. We also support Tourism Concern in it's campaign to end the abuse of porters.
Tourism for the few must not be at the expense of others lives.
Muir's Tours - Code of Conduct for all trekking staff
1. That adequate clothing be available to provide protection in adverse conditions and at altitude. Protection to include hat, sunglasses, suitable footwear, warm clothing and access to a blanket and thermal mat, above the snow line.
2. That leaders and trekkers provide the same standard of medical care for all staff and porters, as they would expect themselves.
3. That no member of staff or porter be paid off, because of illness without reference to the leader or trekkers.
4. That sick people are never sent down alone, but with others who speak their language and understand the problem.
5. That the leader ensures that sufficient funds are available for sick people to cover the cost of their rescue and treatment.
6. That fair wages are paid to all local workers.
