Samburu Reserve - Lake Baringo - Lake Nakuru - Maasai Mara

We offer some of the best safaris that money can buy, however an African safari should not be limited to the well heeled.  This budget safari seeks out the wildlife in some of the best locations in East Africa.

Travelling by jeep and staying in public campsites, this safari is low budget, but it is also great value.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi - Samburu Reserve

Depart Nairobi in the morning passing through the rich agricultural farmland on the slopes of Mount Kenya to the mainly dry scrubland and open Savannah plains of Samburu Reserve. Here the Ewaso Nyiro River supports a wide variety of game among them elephants, buffalo, cheetah, leopard, lion, zebra, giraffe, long necked gerenuk and the Oryx. Set up tents with dinner and overnight at the campsite. L.D.

Day 2: Samburu Reserve

Morning and afternoon wildlife watching drives with all meals at the campsite. B, L, D.

Day 3: Samburu Reserve - Lake Baringo

Depart Samburu after an early breakfast and drive through the scenic areas to the west across the Lerochi Plateau, picnic lunch en route later descend to the floor of the Great Rift Valley, arriving Lk. Baringo in the afternoon.

This is a fresh water lake, which supports a great variety of birds as well as hippos and crocodiles. Indeed the lake is reputed to be the bird-watching centre of Kenya. B, L, D.

Day 4: Lake Baringo - Lake Nakuru National Park

Early morning we head south via Lake Bogoria, which is a shallow soda lake in a very scenic location, which is home to a sizable number of flamingos and many other species of bird. Another highlight is the boiling hot springs and geyser, which contributes to the beauty of the lake. After lunch we proceed to Lake Nakuru, another shallow soda lake that is described as an ornithologists paradise and one of the world’s most magnificent sights - massive flocks of flamingo besides tens of thousands of others birds.   Lake Nakuru is a rhino sanctuary and also harbors lions, warthog, waterbuck, buffalo, hippo and many other animals. Dinner and overnight in a guesthouse or hostel located inside the park. B, L, D.

Day 5: Lake Nakuru - Maasai Mara

We head further south to Narok arriving at our basic campsite located near Sekenani gate at the edge of the park. Here we have walk-in tents with comfortable beds & mattresses. Showers are available at the camp and meals are served in the dinning tent. B, L, D.

Days 6 & 7: Maasai Mara

From the base camp we explore "the Mara" which is packed with the elephants, zebras, rhinos and all kinds of wildlife throughout the year with the spectacular wilderbeest migration from the Serengeti occurring in July and August. All meals at the campsite. B, L, D.

Day 8: Maasai Mara - Nairobi

Early morning wildlife watching drive, return for breakfast and afterwards drive to Nairobi via Narok where Maasai souvenirs can be bought, picnic lunch en route. B.

Campsite Facilities: Samburu – Public utility, drop latrines, cold showers. Lake Nakuru – Cold showers and flush toilets. Maasai Mara - Hot /cold showers & flush toilets.

 

Dates:  There are no set dates, we run this at anytime for two people minimum.

What is included
Accommodation in camping grounds with meals, tea and coffee as shown in the itinerary by the code B,L,D.   Park entrance fees and wildlife viewing.  Transport by car or minibus depending on the group size and time of year (a 4X4 will be needed in the wet seasons).

What is not included
The price allows for joining in Nairobi (or other agreed place) and does not include international
flights or departure taxes,  personal insurance, visa fees, vaccination costs, personal clothing and equipment, all items of a personal nature and all drinks.  Tips (we will give you some guidance). Meals unless specified above by the code B, L, D.

Airfare (from the UK)
As a guide, the international airfare should be in the range £430 to £550 for economy class.  We can provide a competitive quote with excellent service for your flight tickets.

Visa
A visa is required and will cost about £30.  We provide an optional extra service if you need assistance in obtaining your visas.

Travell Insurance

Comprehensive personal insurance, including search and rescue is required on this trip. For UK clients we recommend the policies of the British Mountaineering Council, for their expertise in evacuation from remote areas worldwide.
