Borneo - Mahakam River Safari & Camp Leakey's Orang-utan II

On this safari you are going cruise among the beautiful scenery surrounding the Mahakam river and Ohong's creek. You will also spend time trekking through the jungle in search of the Orang-utan, many kinds of birds, proboscis monkey, macaque, gibbon plus many other wonderful creatures of Borneo.

Time is spent at Camp Leakey Research Centre a rehabilitation centre for Orang-utan, well known among naturalists.

Itinerary

Day 1 Balikpapan / Samarinda / Mahakam.   Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport you are met and directly transferred by bus to Loa Janan, then boarding our houseboat for adventure along the Mahakam river. Meals provided and overnight on houseboat. (LD)

Day 2 Muara / Muntai / Tanjung Isuy / Mancong.   Arrival at Muara Muntai, take a village sightseeing tour, then cross Jempang lake to Tanjung Isuy by motorised canoe. We are welcomed by the Dayaq Benuaq in the traditional way. Afterwards proceed by motorised canoe to Mancong. On the way you are going to see the beautiful scenery of Ohong's creek. Then return to Tanjung Isuy for Overnight. (BLD) 

Day 3 Tanjung Isuy / Tenggarong / Balikpapan.  Early in the morning we go downstream in our houseboat to Tenggarong. On arrival at Tenggarong we visit the former palace of Sultan Kutai Kertanegara. You will see the Sultan's impressive collection of heirlooms, china ceramics and cultural items in the museum. Afterwards transfer by car to Balikpapan and check in at hotel. (BLD) 

Day 4  Balikpapan / Pangkallanbun / Tanjung Putting.  After breakfast transfer to the airport for a flight to Pangkallanbun (only every Monday, Wednesday & Friday). On arrival transfer to Kumai then cruise on the Sekonyer river. Overnight in the boat or Rimba Lodge. (BLD) 

Day 5  Tanjung Harapan / Pondok Tanggui / Camp Leakey.  After breakfast we leave the houseboat / lodge to visit Pondok Tanggui, a new Orang-utan rehabilitation centre ½ an hour up river, then proceed to Camp Leakey Research Centre a well established rehabilitation centre of Orang-utan. Trekking through the tropical rain forest searching for the wild Orang-utans, birds, agile gibbons and other primates as well as the exotic tropical plants. Late afternoon return we return to the boat and head downstream to a lodge. (BLD) 

Day 6  Camp Leakey / Kumai / Pangkallambun.  After breakfast return visit Camp Leakey and watching many kinds of birds, proboscis monkey, macaque, gibbon. We transfer to Pangkallambun and check in at our hotel. Meals and overnight stay at Thamrin Hotel or similar. (BLD) 

Day 7  Pangkallanbun.  After breakfast, morning free at leisure until transferred to the airport for your onward flight. (B)

What is included
Fully board except first and last days, meals as stated e.g. B/ L/ D. Accommodation in either the houseboat or lodges. All internal transport as stated.

What is not included
The price allows for joining in Balikpapan and does not include international airfare and departure taxes. Hotels other than detailed on days 3-6, personal insurance, visa fees, vaccination costs, personal clothing and equipment, all items of a personal nature and all alcoholic drinks.

This tour is detailed as one of the attractions in Indonesia and we would be pleased to help you with other venues and hotels etc. Prices range from about US$15 per day.

Visas
Visitors from most countries who arrive in Indonesia without a visa will be granted a 60 day stay if they have proof of onward ticket and adequate funds.
