Ger Camps - General Information

What is a Ger ?
A ger is the traditional round shaped dwelling that has been used since the
Mongols developed a nomadic lifestyle. The ger is not quite so portable as a
teepee, but after a few times it is
easily assembled and dismantled. A ger consists of a felt covering over a
collapsible wooden frame, and usually with a wooden floor. Even today most of the items used
in the making of a ger are natural materials such as felt made from the
wool of sheep. The rope that ties it all together is usually made with
camel and or sheep wool, intertwined with horse and or yak hair.
A ger camp is the Mongolian alternative to the house or hotel and serves as a
more than adequate shelter in the remote areas of Mongolia where hotels are not
viable or wanted. We can arrange for you to stay in a small camp run by
nomads where you can experience what life is like for the nomads. We have
added a toilet tent and a shower tent so that you are not too deprived. Or
you can stay in the larger ger camps which have been set up with tourists in
mind.
Our summer ger camp with a nomadic family as hosts with horse riding.
Ger Tourist
Camps offer gers for couples or two people sharing, restaurants,
bars, washing facilities often with showers and a sauna. Ger Tourist Camp
restaurants serve traditional Mongolian cuisine as well as dishes sourced from
Europe and other parts of Asia. The staff at these camps will be a mixed bunch
with some city dwellers as well as nomads. These camps provide a memorable taste
of Mongolian living, but for a more realistic experience try our summer camp.
Kindly bear in mind that Mongolia has a limited experience in tourism compared
to many other countries so the level of service you receive will vary.
