Muir's Tours - Responsible Tourism

Travel in general is very harmful, to the environment and to cultural diversity, and yet these are the key pleasures of travel to many people. However, if your travelling is done with concern for these issues it can reap benefits for all concerned.

Conserving the Environment
Tourism at present is very damaging to the planet and it is at an unsustainable level already. Too many tour operators are ignoring the environment damage, in the rat-race for profits. Secondly, many independent travellers are unaware of the harm that they are doing, as they travel to remote areas. Other tourists are unaware of the harm that can arise as a consequence of unthinkingly choosing a tour operator who is irresponsible.

A Poor Deal for Local People
In extreme cases local people are removed from their homes and land. Many are also excluded from involvement in the tourist operations in their own neighbourhood and only get to experience the negative consequences. They have problems such as they are denied drinking water in favour of keeping golf greens green and showers running in luxury hotels.

In situations where the locals are involved they are typically paid poor wages and their health and safety put in unnecessary danger. Tourism is also wiping out the differences between the people of this planet, exposure to some tourists results in communities losing their culture differences.

Muir's Tours aims to provide discerning and responsible travellers with a satisfying choice. A choice that will minimise the damage and increase the positive benefits of tourism for the poor.

Sustainable Livelihoods
We also help them to maintain and develop sustainable tourism solutions that protect and enhance indiginous cultures and the environment. For example in Nepal we are working with a number of sustainable projects that provide locally produced fuel thereby reversing deforestation and the consequent land-errosion. It also means communities need to earn less cash in order to buy fuel. It also means arguments for gigantic and damaging hydro-electric dams are weakened.

"Please be a responsible tourist- act and choose wisely then everyone wins".
