Wildlife in the wild - Sabah
Safari
Borneo
A 7 day wildlife safari into the rainforests of
Borneo - the highlights being the orang utan and bats. Extra nights can
be added at Sakau or Sepilok Nature Resort, which is adjacent to the world
renowned orang utan rehabilitation centre.
Itinerary
Day 1
Kota Kinabalu On arrival, transfer to your hotel. At
sunset, drive up to Signal Hill for a bird's eye view of the city. Visit the
colourful local night market before we go for a scrumptious dinner. (D)
Day 2
Gaya-Sapi Islands After
breakfast, transfer to jetty for a half hour boat ride to Gaya Island . Put on
your walking shoes and explore one of the jungle trails (45 minutes) among
lowland rainforest, mangrove swamp and identify some unique flora and fauna.
Transfer five minutes to Sapi Island for picnic lunch. Free time to swim,
snorkel or scuba dive before we transfer back to the mainland and your hotel.

Day 3
Kinabalu World Heritage Site - Poring
Drive 2 hours (88 km) amid rice fields and Dusun villages, then over the
ridges of the Crocker Range to the foothills of Mt. Kinabalu at 5,000ft, to
arrive at the park headquarters at Kundasang. Explore the Visitor Centre and
Mountain Garden; home to some of the 24 species of flowering rhododendrons, 10
species of carnivorous pitcher plants, estimated 1,400 species of orchids,
over 600 species of ferns, more than 40 species of oak trees and over 300
species of birds.
Continue for 40 km to Poring. Explore tropical rainforest among the jungle
trail leading to the treetop canopy walkways suspended 41 meters above the
forest floor before returning to sea-level. (BL)
Day 4
Sandakan/Selingan
Transfer to airport for morning flight MH2129 etd8.00am to Sandakan. On
arrival at Sandakan airport eta 08.50 am, transfer to jetty for 45 minutes
boat ride to Selingan Island (40km), fully equipped and licensed to carry 12
persons. Free time to explore the island, swim and snorkel. After
dinner, wait for the signal from the park ranger before we proceed in small
groups to watch green turtles laying eggs. The rangers will transplant
the eggs to a hatchery and you may see the release of baby turtles to the sea.
You should be allowed to assist. This island is a park conservation area
since 1977 and turtles have been nesting here every night throughout the year.

Photographing the turtles between 6pm – 6am is strictly prohibited.
Day 5
Selingan/Sukau Return
to Sandakan by boat and proceed for a short tour of Sandakan town including a
tea break in one of the houses on the water village and the Australian War
Memorial. Continue to Sandakan jetty for a 2 hours boat journey to Sukau
Rainforest Lodge along Sabah's longest river, Kinabantangan with opportunity
to view birds and wildlife in virgin mangrove, wetland and rainforest
habitats. Late afternoon take a 2 hour river cruise using electric motor in
search of some of the 10 primate species including Proboscis monkeys as they
settle down on treetops along the Kinabatangan River. Return for solar heated
hot shower, candle lit dinner and a slide show conducted by the naturalist
guide. Overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (BLD)
Day 6
Sukau Wake up to the calls of
gibbons and hornbills. A 6.00 am morning river cruise up the Kinabatangan
River to view more birds and wildlife. Proceed to the Kelenanap ox-bow lake
for a short jungle walk (if weather permits). Experience the wilderness of
Borneo. You have the option to participate in the conservation project by
planting trees within the 64 acres of adopted land. In the afternoon, we
proceed for another river cruise for more wildlife. After dinner an optional
night safari cruise spotting nocturnal animals, crocodiles and birds.

Day 7
Sukau/Sepilok After
breakfast, transfer by boat to Sukau Village for a short tour and return to
Sandakan by boat journey. Lunch at Sandakan before proceed to Sepilok Orang
Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Trek ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden
plank walks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 3 pm and video show.
Transfer to airport for departure on flight MH2065 etd 5.20pm. (BL)

What is included
Accommodation in hotels and lodges (6 nights).

What is not included
The price allows for joining in Kota Kinabalu,
Borneo and does not include international airfare and departure taxes.
Personal insurance, visa fees, vaccination costs, personal clothing and
equipment, all items of a personal nature and all alcoholic drinks.
Airfare (From the UK)
As a guide, the international airfare should be
about £780 (May – September - dry season) for economy class.
