Why do so many people dance salsa ?
As salsa is low impact it is a great way to keep in shape, much easier than a treadmill and above all it is terrific fun (mostly we skim our feet across the floor, without lifting them very much - it's not usual to stomp feet). And WOW, the music is unbelievable - you cannot fail to be MoTivated on to the dance floor, even if you are English. Recently the medical world claimed salsa to be beneficial for the brain too, as there is the need to be constantly thinking about what you are doing, even if subconsciously.
Do I need to come along with a partner ?
You can if you wish, but it is not necessary as we have many single dancers, male & female. During the classes we frequently rotate partners, so everyone gets a chance to learn from each other. This rotating also helps to break the ice, then after the class in the salsa disco it is quite natural to dance with your fellow class members.
Ladies, do not be shy, it is normal in a salsa disco such as MoTivation to ask a man to dance. He knows it means "can I have this dance", nothing more. Romance does sometimes blossom on the dance floor, but please be clear, the environment and people are very different from the night club scene.
After the classes are over, do not be afraid of asking a more experienced dancer to partner you on the dance floor, most will oblige, as they remember when they were learners. And likewise accept requests from more experienced dancers, even though you think you are too inexperienced. This is often the best way to progress.
How can I make progress ?
You need to practice as much as possible and ideally go to at least 2 classes week. The free time on the dance floor after the class is very important as much is learnt as you practice after the class. It is said that you need to practice for 5 times the amount of time time in a class to allow the new skills to be burnt onto the inside of your skull. So get out on the dance floor regularly.
An instructional DVD is available for all levels - http://www.salsadancedvd.com/
Is Alcohol Available at Reflex Dance Studio ?
We have a bar and lounge area for resting and chatting. Salsa dance is not so easy unless you are fairly sober, so generally not much is drunk, but the friendly atmosphere is evident and usually there is a large number of members in the bar to chat to. As a result of the need to keep on your feet, there are no anti social problems related to overuse of alcohol.
What do I wear ?
Our main dance area is a polished wooden sprung floor and is ideal for dance, it was purpose made, but the right shoes do make a difference. Rubber soled shoes of any sort may hold you back. Come along in shoes that will allow you to spin.
With the exception of our special events, there is no dress code. It is very relaxed and casual at MoTivation Salsa. Clothing should allow plenty of movement and not have too much material or dangly bits, this could get in the way. Please do not wear bulky and sharp jewelry on your hands.
