Muir's Tours - Tanzania - Pangani

Pangani

Zanzibar is so exotic, but if all you want is a few quiet days at the Indian Ocean coast, then Pangani is the place for you.

Maziwe Island (left / top) has clear water and coral to explore. Pangani beach (right / bottom) has many interesting things to keep your attention, such as sandpipers, hawks, mangrove trees and crabs plus interesting shells and rocks.

There is a good pool in the complex at Argovia but the best option for swimming in the sea is to take an hours boat ride to the desert(ed) island - Maziwe. The island's trees were cut down to stop it being used by the Ugandan army at some time in the past, when an invasion was expected, so now it is quite small (25 feet X 250 feet) as the sand gets washed away. There is no shade, so if you intend staying there for a number of hours it is best to take an umbrella or two, plus plenty of clothes to protect you from the sun. Snorkelling (take your own gear) above coral reefs is possible, but only in calm weather, near Maziwe island. There is no diving immediately at hand, but it can be arranged on the larger island of Pemba.

The 1 hour boat ride to Maziwe is well worth the effort.
