In Swahili Serengeti means 'endless plains' and there
are many places where all you can see around you is flat grassland,
but there are many islands of rocky outcrops. These kopjes, as
they are called locally, are the resting place of lion, leopard
and cheetah.
A vast savannah dotted with rocky outcrops, acacia
forests and Kilimanjaro provide the backdrop for an extraordinary
drama. Every year, almost 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds
of thousands of zebra undertake a circuit of 1,000 kms, searching
for new pastures.
The string of migrants face many challenges as they
head north during December - May from southern and central Serengeti
pastures. The hungry crocodiles in the Grumeti River look forward
to this time of year. From June to October they are moving southwards
again, all the time with hundreds of big cats in tow.
Interesting side trips:
Lake Natron and Ol Donyo Lengai volcano in the north (2 to 3 days
roundtrip).
Lake Victoria and the source of the Nile. (2 to 3 days
