Muir's Tours - Volunteers Teach Peru

Teach English in Huancayo, Peru

Teach English, basic computing and artistic activities in the state run schools of the city of Huancayo. This busy city lies in a fertile valley in the midst of the Central Andes and is important to Peruvian tourism as well as agriculture and commerce. The city is key to many hundreds of rural villages in the mountains around the valley. The local people are proud and have kept many traditions of the Huanca alive. Particularly interesting are the artisans' quarters of Tambo and San Jerónimo, whose inhabitants have been potters and silversmiths since the dawn of civilization.

When you are not teaching you should travel around and visit other places such as Concepción, and see such sights as Ocopa Convent and Laguno Paca in Jauja, the first colonial capital. Huancayo is famous for its cuisine, with dishes such as Papa a la Huancaína (potato in a spicy cheese sauce), Patachi (a bacon and wheat soup) and Huallca Chupe (chicken and vegetable soup). These are just a few of the many dishes that can be sampled to the strains of local musicians. Also worth a visit is the nearby town of Ingenio and lunch on the delicious fresh rainbow trout bred at the many fish farms in the area.
