Muir's Tours - polar bears

Polar Bear Tundra Lodge Tours

Positioned outside of Churchill in one of the best areas for polar bear frequency, our static Tundra Lodge gives you the opportunity to see more of the bears, other wildlife and the changing moods of the tundra. This is one of the best opportunities to see the northern lights (aurora Borealis) as the light pollution in Churchill town makes it difficult.

You spend 3 days plus on the tundra in total. The Tundra Lodge gives a great chance to see the Northern Lights as well as providing extra time for bear observation. The 7 day tour has minimal time in Churchill, compared to the 8 day tour which has about 1 1/2 days in the Churchill area to learn more about the history, culture and northern activities.

The Tundra Lodge is a series of connected carriages with single bedrooms plus separate dining and lounge areas.  Because it’s on wheels, it will be situated in one of the best bear-viewing areas. Join us on an adventure that promises total immersion in a spectacular tundra environment! The location, combined with the opportunity for half-day excursions around the tundra in the additional vehicle we keep on site, affords us some of the best possible opportunities to observe the bears and to enjoy the other wildlife that the Churchill area has to offer.

There are limited toilet and shower facilities as water and waste transportation is a real problem out here from an environmental angle.  You will share 3 or 4 toilets and 2 showers. 99% of our guests feel the lack of facilities is more than made up by the extra time on the tundra.

If the bears do not come calling at the lodge, we will seek them out, as we have the use of a roving tundra vehicle. Our expedition leader will provide a wealth of information for you - explaining all about these remarkable animals and the environment around you, all from the warmth and comfort of our roving vehicle. We may see solitary adult males lumbering across the tundra or young adult males play-fighting, or maybe a mother and cubs.

There is a similar option that includes expedition leaders who are also professional photographers in addition to being naturalist guides.

The Mobile Tundra Lodges are of different sizes and accommodate about 35-38 guests, but on the tours detailed below we limit our groups to about 28.

Example Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Winnipeg  Upon arrival in Winnipeg you will be transferred to your hotel. We gather at 7:00pm for our group dinner with after dinner tour briefing. Our accommodation in Winnipeg is normally the historic Fort Garry Hotel.  (D.).

Day 2 Winnipeg to Churchill / Tundra Lodge  Today we fly to Churchill. This afternoon we transfer to the Mobile Tundra Lodge by tundra vehicle, taking time to view wildlife along the way. We will have a presentation on polar bears by one of our expedition leaders or scientists, all of whom are extremely knowledgeable about the bears and the northern environments.

As evening falls on the remote and starkly beautiful tundra, a few travellers remain in the domain of the polar bear to observe and experience the solitude and serenity. The setting sun intensifies the barren landscape and if we’re lucky, the northern lights may grace us with their eerie presence in the dark sky.  The glowing eyes of Arctic fox, bears and other wildlife may be visible in the light our lodge casts across the frozen tundra. Overnight in the tundra lodge. (B, L, D.).

Days 3 - 4 Tundra Lodge  The Mobile Tundra Lodge is strategically positioned at the beginning of each season in the best area for bear viewing. During our time spent on the tundra we will have wonderful opportunities for viewing bears and other wildlife. Inquisitive bears often approach the lodge, which is equipped with rows of windows and fenced observation decks to allow our own curiosity, but to be sure you get enough we take you on short expeditions in the roving tundra vehicle
Overnight in the tundra lodge. (B, L, D.).
