The Great Photographic Polar Bear Tour

Positioned outside of Churchill on the tundra itself the Mobile Tundra Lodge gives you the opportunity to see more of the bears, other wildlife and the other moods of the tundra. As evening falls on this remote and starkly beautiful environment, a few travellers remain in the domain of the polar bear to watch the solitude and serenity as the sunset intensifies the barren landscape from the safety and comfort of this mobile hotel. This “train” of connected single rooms and dining and lounge areas accommodates about 35-38 guests (we limit our groups to between 22 and 30), and because it’s on wheels, it is sure to be situated in the best bear-viewing area each season.

There are limited toilet and shower facilities as water and waste transportation is a real problem out here from an environmental angle.  You will share 3 or 4 toilets and 2 showers. 99% of our guests feel the small inconvenience is more than made up by the extra time on the tundra. More about the tundra lodge

Join us on an adventure that promises total immersion in a spectacular tundra environment!

The location, combined with the opportunity for half-day excursions around the tundra in the additional vehicle we keep on site, affords us some of the best possible opportunities to observe the bears and to enjoy the other wildlife that the Churchill area has to offer.  At the end of this day of exploration, we can retire to our warm, comfortable lounge / diner for dinner and educational presentations. If we’re lucky, the northern lights may grace us with their eerie presence in the skies, and the glowing eyes of Arctic fox, bears and other wildlife may be visible in the light our lodge casts across the frozen tundra.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive Winnipeg
Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel where we gather for an informal dinner and orientation at 7:00pm. D.

Day 2: Winnipeg to Churchill / Tundra Lodge
We will fly to Churchill and transfer to our Tundra Lodge via tundra vehicle, taking care to photograph along the way. This afternoon and evening we will have our first opportunities for bear viewing. We will also have a chance to gather and meet our photo tour leaders, to share experiences and discuss Arctic photography. B, L, D.

Day 3 - 6: Tundra Lodge
As the Tundra Lodge is mobile, it is strategically positioned at the beginning of each season in the best area for bear viewing. During our time spent on the tundra, we will have wonderful early morning and late afternoon/evening photo opportunities, giving us a unique chance to photograph these animals at sunrise and sunset. Since the lodge has plenty of common space – a “great room” with tables and chairs as well as a dining car, each with sliding windows – photographers will have plenty of space for shooting at will.

Bears often come within close range and approach our lodge, which is also equipped with fenced observation decks to accommodate our own curiosity. Our unique location, combined with the opportunity for half-day excursions around the tundra in our on-site tundra vehicle, afford us some of the best possible wildlife experiences in the Churchill area.

At the end of a day of exploration, we can retire to our warm, comfortable accommodations for dinner and presentations. If we’re lucky, the northern lights may grace us with their eerie presence in the night skies, and the glowing eyes of Arctic fox, bears, and other wildlife may be visible in the light our mobile hotel casts across the frozen ground. B, L, D.

Day 7: Churchill / Winnipeg
This morning, we bid a fond farewell to our tundra home and head back into town for our flight to Winnipeg. Depending on flight schedules, we may have some time for last minute exploration and a chance to pick up Arctic souvenirs. We will enjoy a farewell lunch in Churchill or dinner in Winnipeg. B. (L or D, but not both).

Day 8: Winnipeg / Home
After breakfast, we will be transferred to the airport for our return flights home. (B).

Age Limits: 12 years or older, if you are passionate about polar bears. Only suitable for those who can stay confined for 8 hours or more in the buggy.
