Muir's Tours - polar bears

The Mobile Tundra Lodges

Positioned for the whole of October and November on the tundra itself the Mobile Tundra Lodges provide the opportunity to see more of the bears, other wildlife and the other moods of the tundra. As evening falls on this remote and starkly beautiful environment, a few travellers remain in the domain of the polar bear to watch the solitude and serenity as the sunset intensifies the barren landscape from the safety and comfort of this mobile hotel. This “train” of connected single rooms and dining and lounge areas accommodates up to 35 guests (to give more space we limit our group size on all but the Adventurer series), and because it’s on wheels, it is sure to be situated in the best bear-viewing area each season. Join us on an adventure that promises total immersion in a spectacular tundra environment!
Being away from the lights of Churchill gives the best chance to see the northern lights / aurora borealis.
The location, combined with the opportunity for excursions around the tundra in the additional vehicle we keep on site, affords us some of the best possible opportunities to observe the bears and to enjoy the other wildlife that the Churchill area has to offer.  At the end of this day of exploration, we can retire to our warm, comfortable lounge / diner for dinner and educational presentations. If we’re lucky, the northern lights may grace us with their eerie presence in the skies, and the glowing eyes of Arctic fox, bears and other wildlife may be visible in the light our lodge casts across the frozen tundra.

The lodge is made up of a series of vehicles all linked up, looking much like a train on wheels. They are not normally moved during polar bear season.

The usual configuration is two sleeper units, a lounge car, a dining car, and a utility/crew car. A generator provides electricity for lights and battery charging for cameras etc.. Heat is provided by propane furnaces. Additional units on certain tours provides a helipad.

Our lodges have individual bedrooms which are similar to train cabins, these are all single occupancy; half are upper bunks (climb a ladder), half are lower (floor level) bunks - none of the cabins have toilet / shower facilities - these are shared and are limited in number (3 or 4 toilets / 2 showers per 35 guests), so there is often some waiting prior to breakfast and at peak times in the evening. The dining car has a six burner commercial stove and griddle; several BBQs are on the deck. The lounge car has a TV, VCR, and a slide projector.
