The Polar Bears of
Cape Tatnam

See the polar bears in the late summer and autumn before they make their way to Churchill
Seeing polar bears without snow is not so appealing to some, but it does make the photography easier.
The Cape Tatnam Wildlife Management Area is populated by polar bears and August, September and early October is a perfect period for observing the mothers and cubs as they forage along the shoreline of Hudson Bay. Like Wapusk National Park (Wapusk is Cree for great white bear) to the north west, Cape Tatnam is a polar bear denning site, where females give birth to their cubs in winter. It is therefore quite common to see mother bears and their cubs as they pass the time away in the Cape Tatnam area until the ice forms on Hudson Bay.
Cape Tatnam WMA lies in the south west corner of Hudson Bay, about 130 miles south of Churchill and we travel there from Winnipeg via Gillam in two flights, the last being in a multi engine Islander 9 passenger aircraft or similar, which allows great views and photographs of the changing scenery below.
Cape Tatnam Wildlife Management Area is home to polar bears, black bears, moose, martens, wolverine, wolves, beluga whales, bearded seals and ring seals. It is also a birders’ paradise: willow ptarmigan, snowy owls, bald eagles, osprey, parasitic jaegers, the northern shrike, bonaparte’s gulls and arctic terns are all found here. Hundreds of thousands of snow, ross’s and Canada geese stage here to rest and feed before travelling further south. More
Cape Tatnam WMA traces the shoreline of Hudson Bay from the mouth of the Nelson River to the Manitoba-Ontario border. Comprising just over 530,000 hectares this coastal habitat lies along the clear waters of Hudson Bay, with endless sand beaches relieved here and there by high ridges and broad river valleys. One of the features of the area is a striking and abrupt transition from spruce forest to tundra along the edge of Hudson Bay.
The majority of the maternity denning habitat in Manitoba is protected by Parks Canada. Maternity denning occurs in the Cape Tatnam and Cape Churchill Wildlife Management Areas. Both of these WMAs have management plans under development that will control access to maternity denning areas. Our tours will be in accordance with the regulations. We avoid the period around February - March when the mothers are emerging from the dens with her new cubs and they hope to feast on seals from the iced up bay. The mother polar bear may have lost as much as 50 kilos of body weight, as she will not have eaten since entering her den in November or December. By August the bear family is well established.

Is it safe to be
near polar bears ?
Attacks on humans by polar bears seldom occur, and human fatalities are rare.
For example, the death in 1999 of a Baker Lake, Nunavut, woman following an
attack by a polar bear was the first in 25 years. In November 2004 a researcher
was injured in Wapusk NP, but was not seriously hurt, as the bear was chased
away by other people. These are the only two reported incidents in over 25
years. But to be sure we have a Buffalo fence around our lodge.
Polar Bear Facts courtesy of Polar Bears International
This unique program offers routine encounters with polar bears at very close quarters. During August and September it is common to see upwards of 120 bears pass in front of our lodge. Through the lodge’s 8 ft high Buffalo fence it is often possible to photograph bears as close as 3 feet away, as these creatures are so curious.
Sample Itinerary (there are a number of options with more days of polar bear watching)
Start & Finish Days Unlike winter trips to this area, there is very little danger of delays to your travel arrangements due to the weather, so just 1 night in Winnipeg at the start and one at the end of this trip is all you should need. We can arrange your Winnipeg hotel for you plus any other activities in Manitoba or elsewhere in Canada. You may like to consider 3 days in Riding Mountain NP for black bear watching, or the birds of Oak Hammock Marsh maybe.
Day 1 An early morning departure from Winnipeg on a Calm Air flight to Gillam. You transfer to a private charter and depart for Nanuk Lodge (Nanuk is Inuktitut for polar bear), arriving at about noon. During this 45 min. flight you will have a wonderful opportunity for photographs as you pass over the taiga forest, the mighty Nelson River and the Hudson Bay coastal plain and tidal flats. After you have settled in we will explain more about the program over lunch. In the afternoon you will be taken on a short interpretive walk on inland palsa gogs, eskers, tundra ponds and into the taiga forest. Dinner will be served at about 6 pm and following the meal there is an evening talk: “Travel in Bear Country”. If the night is clear you may get a view of the amazing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
Day 2 At about 9 am you depart on a tour by ATV of the tidal flats and Hudson Bay shoreline. About 8 miles from the lodge you explore an historic beached vessel called the “Mooswa”. At this site you are treated to lunch served around a campfire. This tour allows you to experience the unique environment of the polar bears under your own feet out in the open, but you also have the option of remaining at the lodge throughout the tour to maximise the photo opportunity. On some days as many as 5 bears have been sighted against the fence. Dinner is served at about 6 pm and is followed by a slide presentation “Arctic Wildlife and Northern Lights”. Again, on a clear night the Aurora Borealis may be visible.
Day 3 At about 9 am we take our ATV and make a polar bear photo shoot. This morning you are taken up close to the bear in its natural habitat. This location is Manitoba’s best-kept secret when it comes to photographing and viewing polar bears. In the past as many as 12 bears have been spotted in one general location at one time. In addition to the polar bears, the area is home to a wide range of wildlife and our job is getting you to the right spot to photograph it. You return to the lodge for lunch and in the afternoon you are again invited to immerse yourself in the environment. Dinner is at 6 pm and the evening presentation is “Traditional Lifestyles Of The North”. Again, on a clear night the Aurora Borealis may be visible.
Day 4 After an early breaskfast you bid farewell to Nanuk Lodge and the staff and depart on a charter flight to Gillam. In Gillam you transfer to the Calm Air flight which departs at about 10:45 hrs and arrive in Winnipeg in the early part of the afternoon.
Extra Days A full day photo tour of Coastal Hudson
Bay. Photography of Polar Bears and other abundant wildlife on our unique
landscape. We take lunch around a campfire. After lunch we explore the river
deltas and coastal eskers. Return to the lodge at about 5 with supper served at
about 6. On a clear night the Aurora Borealis may be
visible.
